Blue Sapphires Make Headlines—Are You Making Your Own Blue News?
Hardly a month passes that some fabulous sapphire jewel isn’t in the news. From auctions to celebrities to regular folks, blue sapphires are beloved by many and found on anyone with timeless style and a love of the color blue! Here are two high-profile blue sapphire jewels in recent news, and tips on how you can get your hands on your own.
A Sapphire Ring from Sotheby’s
On October 4 in Hong Kong, an exceptional blue sapphire ring was auctioned off to the highest bidder. The lucky buyer snapped up a 15.32 ct. cushion-shape Burmese sapphire flanked by half-moon-shape colorless diamonds that was mounted in a platinum ring. The juicy-looking sapphire was accompanied by multiple gemology certificates and had a distinctive color that experts called a true royal blue! The hammer price was $443,359.

Nancy Reagan’s Stars and Stripes Band
Nancy Reagan was married to actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan and had a reputation for loving jewelry and fashion! So when some Reagan belongings—including jewelry—came up for auction in September at Christie’s, the public’s response was overwhelming. In particular, a gold and platinum flag-motif band featuring diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, which the First Lady wore on July 4, 1986, sold for much more than its original $5,000 to $7,000 estimate. Its actual sale price was $319,500. Could the blues in the band be the reason for the big price? We can’t know for sure but we wouldn’t be surprised.
